Door from the Oba's Palace, Benin City, Nigeria
Kathy Curnow

This heavy iroko door is of a type that pre-dates the colonial period, and several are still in use both in the royal palace and elsewhere in Benin City, such as Chief Ogiamien's house. Its massive size is achieved through several planks; locks once included ivory bolts. This particular door is coated with white, the color of peace, coolness, and restraint.
