Although this photograph depicts members of the British Punitive Expedition in a palace courtyard surrounded by treasures--throne, altar figures, ivory tusks--it includes a surviving steeply-pitched roof section with an attached snake. This differs from other palace depictions and descriptions: the snake is not on a tower, and it is much smaller than those whose cast heads are in museum collections. It is difficult to know whether this is an architectural shift, or if other, tower-less courtyard roofs also supported snakes.
