Benin chiefs have multiple outfits suitable for palace wear. One everyday type of attire many share is the caped white gown (ezi-okherhe) that, as Nevadomsky and Aisien noted, Chief Ajayi Igunbor, the Unionyen of Benin, introduced in 1934 at Oba Akenzua II's instigation. Modeled after Catholic cassocks, it departed from the bare-chested use of wrappers that had prevailed previously.
