Palace Door

This half of the massive iroko (African mahogany) palace doors depicts the seated monarch surrounded by courtiers, the royal ancestral shrine with its brass heads at the upper right. Although the figures have more naturalistic, individualized faces than they had in prior eras, and attempts at more natural proportions and perspective are attempted, the artist still employs hieratic scale and shows discomfort with the three-quarter pose.
